Eastbound, this is the leg that ends where the holiday gets louder. Passengers come off the gulets at Fethiye harbour with a week already booked in Alanya; others flew into Dalaman for the Lycian half and are moving to an all-inclusive on the eastern strip. A third group has a flight home from Antalya or from Gazipaşa and would rather spend the last nights near that end of the coast than race the road on the final morning. A few are simply going back to a flat in Alanya after a fortnight on the water. Whatever the reason, the booking swallows a whole day rather than a morning.

The order of the road reverses, and with it the difficulty: the mountains come first, while everyone is still fresh. Out of the Eşen valley the route climbs past Seydikemer onto the Elmalı plateau, cold in the early hours and all hay and apple country once the light is up, crosses the pass and follows the D350 down through Korkuteli to Antalya. From there the D400 takes over for good — Aksu, Belek, Side, the Manavgat plain, then the headland curves above Avsallar and İncekum and the descent through Payallar and Konaklı, with the castle rock closing the view. Of the 4 hours 35 that cover 355 km, it is the last hour that August lengthens.

• The slowest hour is the final one, so an early departure buys more here than on any short leg: reaching Alanya at dusk in August means driving the busiest stretch after dark.
• If a cruise ends at the harbour in the morning, agree a pickup at the quay itself rather than at a hotel you checked out of several days earlier.
• A drop-off in Kestel, Mahmutlar or Kargıcak means crossing the centre of Alanya first, and that crossing is the slowest quarter of an hour of the whole run.
• The eastern half is all D400, so a set-down along the way at Side, Okurcalar or Avsallar costs noticeably less time than carrying on to Alanya itself.
