Going east, the trip usually starts a holiday rather than interrupts one. The classic pattern is two centres: a couple of nights in the city for the old town and the museum, then the rest of the fortnight on the beach at Alanya, with the cases repacked in between. Then there are the people going out to the residential coast — Oba, Mahmutlar, Kestel — where a large foreign community lives year-round, and the families coming back east with household shopping the resort does not stock. The coach does run, but it calls at every town and sets you down at the bus station on the edge of Alanya.

The Antalya to Alanya transfer starts with the city itself — boulevards and lights out to the eastern edge — then picks up the D400 past Aksu and the airport turnings. The flat half goes quickly: Serik, the Belek turning, the Manavgat plain and the Side junctions at the halfway mark. After Okurcalar the road stops being flat, climbing onto the headlands at İncekum and Avsallar before dropping to the shore at Payallar and Konaklı. Count 130 km and about 110 minutes. Heading east in the afternoon you have the sun behind you; in winter the last hour is driven in the dark, with the castle lit up ahead.

• If your address is in Konaklı, Avsallar or İncekum, say so — those come before Alanya itself and there is no point driving into town and back out.
• Bringing back furniture, white goods or a big shop from the city stores? Describe the load when you book, because it decides the vehicle rather than the price of a seat.
• From late autumn the cliff section is driven after dark, so if you are arriving at an apartment rather than a hotel, make sure somebody will be there with the key.
• On a two-centre holiday, a late-morning departure sits neatly between the city's two rush hours and still lands you in Alanya for an afternoon check-in.
