The two ends of the Antalya bay are two different holidays, and this leg is booked by people who want both. Alanya gives you a town: markets, a castle rock, a sandy strip that runs for kilometres, shops open in winter. Kemer gives the opposite — pine forest down to pebble coves, the Beydağları rising almost straight out of the water behind the hotels, evenings that stay cooler even in August, and a marina where gulets and dive boats load up. The commonest reason is a hotel change halfway through; the next is a family whose first week was the beach and whose second is built around walking or diving.

The whole journey is the D400, with Antalya in the middle. Out of Alanya the road climbs onto the cliffs, then settles into the flat, fast run west past Manavgat, Serik and Aksu. At Antalya the car leaves the coast for the ring road behind the city, the one place where a summer weekday afternoon costs real time. After Konyaaltı the mountains take over: the highway is cut into the slopes above the sea and curves through short tunnels past Beldibi and Göynük into Kemer. Allow around 2 hours 20 minutes for the 175 km; an afternoon departure means a last hour driven into the sun.

• Pickup is normally at your Alanya hotel reception, where the driver waits with a name sign — give the district as well as the hotel name, since the strip runs from Konaklı to Mahmutlar.
• Two hours twenty is long enough to want a stop, and it is easier to ask for one on the flat section before Antalya than on the mountain road after it.
• The last forty minutes into Kemer are winding, so anyone prone to travel sickness should take the front seat and take something before leaving Alanya rather than at Konyaaltı.
• Beldibi, Göynük, Kiriş, Çamyuva and Tekirova are separate villages either side of Kemer, so name the village when you book or the driver will head for the town centre.
