After a few days behind a resort gate the thing people miss is a town, and Alanya supplies one. Boats leave the quay for the caves under the castle rock, the Red Tower and the old shipyard stand at its foot, a cable car climbs to the walls, and the weekly market fills whole streets. The valley excursions start at this end of the coast too: the restaurants built over the Dim river, the Dim cave, the canyon at Sapadere. Some make the 95 km once, as a long day out from the fairways; others are changing hotels for the second half, or moving into a let for a month.

Count the resort road first: barrier, the drive out through the pines and the run up to the D400 can take ten minutes before the journey proper starts. Then it is east past Serik and the farmland, the Side turnings, over the Manavgat river and through the town, and onto the newer inland section that carries most of the middle. The last part returns to the sea, curving above the cliffs past Okurcalar, Avsallar and Konaklı, with the castle rock in sight long before the streets. Around 1 hour 20 minutes for the 95 km, and an evening return puts the sun behind you.

• Give the pickup as the hotel's main entrance rather than a block or villa number, since the driver waits at reception with a name sign and the grounds can be large.
• If this is a day out, fix the evening pickup point in Alanya before you leave — the seafront is long, and one landmark is worth more than a street name.
• The harbour and the castle sit on Alanya's western headland, several kilometres from the eastern districts of Tosmur, Kestel and Mahmutlar, so say which end you need.
• An hour and twenty each way makes a long day with small children, and the child seat matters as much on the way back as on the way out.
