Kemer is quiet by design: pine, pebble coves, mountain walls and a small marina town that empties once the season thins. Alanya is the other kind of place, with a covered bazaar and a weekly street market, boats leaving the harbour for the caves under the castle rock, a cable car to the walls and streets of ordinary shops. This leg is booked when the second half of a trip is meant to be busier than the first, when a longer let is waiting at the eastern end of the coast, or when the reason for travelling — family, a market day, a boat already paid for — sits 175 km away.

Going east the difficult part comes first. The D400 leaves Kemer on the corniche, curving and climbing through short tunnels with the Beydağları above and the sea below, until Konyaaltı opens out and the car joins the ring road around the north of Antalya. After that it is straightforward: the flat run east through Aksu and Serik, past the Belek turning, over the Manavgat river, then a newer inland section that shortens the middle before the road drops back to the coast for the cliffs into Alanya. Around 2 hours 20 minutes for the 175 km, and an early start puts the bends behind you before the heat.

• The driver waits with a name sign at your Kemer hotel reception; say if you are in Tekirova, Çamyuva, Kiriş, Göynük or Beldibi, because those villages change the start of the journey by up to twenty minutes.
• The winding section comes in the first forty minutes here, so take travel-sickness precautions before you set off rather than at the halfway stop.
• Alanya's hotels and apartments spread from Konaklı in the west to Tosmur, Kestel and Mahmutlar in the east, and the full address matters more than the town name.
• Ask for the break on the eastern half, after Antalya, where the road is flat and there is somewhere sensible to pull in.
