Ölüdeniz tends to be booked for three particular things. The first is paragliding: the launch sits on Babadağ above the resort, the canopies come down onto Belcekız beach through the afternoon, and a whole week can be planned around one flying window. The second is the water itself — the lagoon behind its hooked shingle spit, flat and pale when the open sea is anything but. The third is walking, because the Lycian Way starts here, which is why a rucksack rather than a suitcase is ordinary on this run. The rest are guests who found the hotel in Ölüdeniz, Ovacık or Hisarönü and the flight into Antalya.

For 185 of the 200 km this is the Fethiye road and it stays well inland: the D350 up to Korkuteli, a long upland crossing by Elmalı with no sea in sight at all, then the fall to Seydikemer and the run along the Eşen valley. Since the whole thing takes 2 hours 40 minutes, the closing 15 km appear to cost barely ten minutes, which flatters them. The road turns uphill out of Fethiye, gains the ridge at Ovacık and Hisarönü, and then falls to sea level down a run of hairpins nobody hurries. That short piece, not the 185 km before it, is the part passengers describe afterwards.

• Paragliding depends on the morning air and on Babadağ being clear, so arriving a day ahead of a booked flight leaves the weather somewhere to move it to.
• If the walk is the point, the first waymarks are a different address from the hotels — name the spot you want to be set down at rather than only the resort.
• Fethiye is the last sensible place to stop for anything you have forgotten, because once the car turns uphill there is nowhere to pull in until the beach.
• Pilots who bring their own wing should mention it at the booking stage: a harness bag is bulky and awkwardly shaped, and it decides which vehicle is sent.
