Going back, the short distance changes the arithmetic of the morning. With 12 km and roughly 20 minutes of road, nearly all the margin you need belongs to the terminal end: the screening at the entrance, the airline's queue and passport control. Work backwards from the time your airline wants you at the desk, add the drive and a little slack, and that is the pickup hour to give when you book. There is rarely a reason to leave earlier than that, even for a flight at dawn.

The car comes into the side street to the hotel door and loads there, then heads back out to Yaşar Sobutay Bulvarı and north towards the airport. Before seven the boulevard is open road; later in the morning it carries the city's own traffic as well, and the lights hold the car for longer, though on a run this short the delay is counted in minutes. Be in the lobby with your cases at the agreed time, and loading at the door is over in moments.

• Ask the airline how early it wants you at the counter, add half an hour, and put that hour on the booking; the flight time itself is the wrong number to plan from.
• A last swim is possible on the hotel's beach shuttle, but if you want to be collected from the beach rather than the hotel, give both addresses when you book.
• Late check-out and an evening flight? Leave the luggage at reception; the driver comes to the door at the hour you chose and the cases go straight into the boot.
