Travelling the other way, the lagoon is behind you and an aircraft is usually in front. Ölüdeniz has no airport, and Dalaman does not serve every market, so a steady share of guests fly out of Antalya and have to cover the whole road back. The same thing happens at the end of a walking trip, once a stretch of the Lycian Way is done and the rest of the ticket is elsewhere, and at the end of a flying week when the mountain finally clouded over. Others are simply moving on, with a second hotel booked at Side, Belek or Antalya and the beach traded for a city.

In this direction the difficult bit comes first. The car leaves the shore and takes the switchbacks up to Hisarönü and Ovacık inside the first ten minutes, which is a great deal to ask before breakfast, then slips down into Fethiye and out along the Eşen valley. Seydikemer is where the long pull up to the high ground begins; beyond it lie the cedar woods, the basin at Elmalı and Korkuteli, and at the end the D350 lowering you into Antalya. 200 km and 2 hours 40 minutes altogether. In the dark the ridge is the slowest part, and on a dawn departure you climb it without seeing any of it.

• A morning flight from Antalya puts the pickup in the small hours, so settle the bill the evening before rather than at a desk that may be unattended at four.
• The bends come at the start here instead of the end, so anyone who travels badly does better to leave on an empty stomach and eat once the car is down in Fethiye.
• Hotels at the Belcekız end stand on lanes a larger vehicle cannot always reach, so expect a short walk with the cases and say if that will not work for you.
• An Antalya departure and a Dalaman one are not the same journey at all — Dalaman is a fraction of this distance, so check which airport your ticket names before booking two hours and forty minutes of road.
