Most of this traffic is going home. A day in Alanya ends after dark with tired children and bags from the bazaar, and the same car that brought the family in takes them back out to the headland. The rest is arriving rather than returning: an overnight coach sets you down at Alanya's bus station with a month of luggage and the apartment is 25 km west, or the first week was booked in the town and the second on the sand at İncekum, which means a checkout at eleven and a new reception before lunch. Visitors coming to see the season's renters make the same run.

Westbound the road leaves the castle rock behind and runs flat through Konaklı and Payallar for the first third, which is the quick part of the 25 km. Then it lifts onto the pine headland and stays high for several kilometres, working around the coves with the sea below on your left, before coming down into Avsallar on the far side. Thirty minutes covers it. What varies is getting out of the centre: at nine in the evening the seafront and the one-way streets take longer than the headland does, while at midnight the whole thing is twenty minutes of empty road.

• The gates on the headland sit back among the pines and look much alike after dark, so book with the hotel's own name rather than the district.
• If you are coming off a coach at Alanya's bus station, give the arrival time roughly and the driver waits there instead of circling the car park.
• For the ride home after an evening out, fix the meeting point before you go down into the town: a corner you can find in the dark beats an address the car cannot reach.
• The headland section is bends the whole way, so ask for a child seat when you book rather than at the kerb.
