Westbound is a different errand. Alanya's own excursions run east and inland — the river valleys, the canyon, the cave — so the classical sights lie in the other direction: the temple and theatre at Side, the great theatre at Aspendos, the waterfall and the river boats at Manavgat. The second reason is timing rather than sightseeing: guests ending a holiday in Alanya often move west for the last nights so the morning airport run is one hour instead of nearly two. And a good share of this traffic is simply visiting — a family split between two hotels, or friends in a Side resort for the week.

The Alanya to Side transfer leaves town on the D400 heading west, 65 km and about 60 minutes. The castle rock sits in the mirror for the first few minutes, then the road lifts away from the bay at Konaklı and Payallar and climbs into the pines above the coves at Avsallar and İncekum. It comes down through Okurcalar, Kızılot and Kızılağaç and the ground flattens into the Manavgat plain — greenhouses, banana tunnels, orange groves — before the river crossing with the town off to the right. The last few kilometres leave the highway for the two-lane hotel road into Side, which is where the time goes in summer.

• Pickups in Oba, Cikcilli or Mahmutlar are apartment addresses rather than hotel receptions, so give the block name and street as well as the district — the residential lanes are steep and often one-way.
• Manavgat sits a few minutes off this road, so the waterfall or a riverside lunch costs little more than the time you spend there.
• If you are moving west for the last nights before flying home, fix the onward airport pickup at the same time — it is the reason the move is worth making.
• Leaving central Alanya between mid-morning and early afternoon in summer is the slowest start of the day; a departure before the shops open saves fifteen minutes.
