Alanya is a district of Antalya province, and that single fact fills most of these cars. Anything provincial happens in the city: residence permits and licences, the courts, the consulates, the specialist departments and the university hospital that the coastal clinics refer people to. Add the students, the concerts and matches, the long-distance bus terminal, and the flights — Gazipaşa, the airport east of Alanya, serves a short list of destinations, so most people fly out of Antalya instead. Very few of these journeys are sightseeing; nearly all of them have a time on them that cannot slip.

The Alanya to Antalya transfer is the full length of the coast road: 130 km on the D400, about 110 minutes, and there is no motorway alternative to fall back on. The first stretch is the hilly one, climbing over the headlands at Konaklı, Avsallar and İncekum above the coves. After Okurcalar the road flattens for good and crosses the Manavgat and Serik plains — greenhouses, cotton, orange groves, the Taurus wall standing to the north. Past Belek comes the Aksu junction, and after that the city: boulevards, lights and the last kilometres to your address. Summer slows the town sections; at night it runs almost straight through.

• Nearly two hours means working backwards from the appointment or the check-in desk rather than forwards from breakfast.
• There is one road and no bypass, so leave a margin on anything with a fixed time — a closure on the coast section has nowhere to send you.
• Manavgat sits near the halfway mark and is the natural place to stop for fuel or coffee if you want a break in the middle.
• Arrange the eastbound return when you book the outbound; a car back to Alanya late in the day is far easier settled in advance than at the kerb.
