The way out begins as town driving. From Oba the car usually runs back along the seafront boulevard towards the centre and then crosses Alanya to reach the D400 on the western side: some seven or eight kilometres of streets, junctions and traffic lights before the open road begins. Before dawn that takes a matter of minutes. In the early evening in high season it is the slowest part of the whole journey, and nothing on the highway afterwards gives the time back, which is why the hour of day matters more than the distance when the pickup is set.

Clear of the town, the rest is open D400 heading west, Konaklı first, then Avsallar, Okurcalar and the long run beyond Manavgat, the whole transfer being 132 km and about 110 minutes. For an early-morning flight that arithmetic means leaving Oba in the dark, so check with the front desk the night before that someone will be there when you come down with the cases. If the flight is from Gazipaşa-Alanya instead, none of this applies: the car heads east, away from the town traffic, and the drive is well under an hour.

• Ask for the pickup at the hotel's address on 25151 Sokak rather than out on the seafront boulevard, where a car loading suitcases holds up everyone behind it.
• Guests who came for a wedding or an event in the Astra Ballroom rarely leave on the same plane; one booking per flight spares the early leavers a wait in the lobby for someone else's car.
• For a summer evening flight, set the pickup earlier rather than trusting the distance: the slow kilometres are the first ones, through Alanya, and they cannot be made up on the open road.
