On departure day the drive is the easy part; the time goes inside the hotel. The main block rises ten floors, and around checkout the lifts are in steady demand, carrying cases and pushchairs down from every level, so getting a family and its luggage to the lobby can take longer than the 25 minutes of road that follow. Bring the bags down well before the agreed time, settle the bill at the desk while someone stays with them, and only then start watching the clock. A car booked for exactly the right minute helps nobody if the cases are still upstairs.

The road back is the arrival in reverse: west along the boulevard and through the same roundabouts to Güzeloba, then north through Altıntaş and round to the terminal. Because the route stays well east of the city centre, central Antalya's rush hours hardly touch it, and the 18 km usually take about 25 minutes. The one stretch that can hold the car up is the boulevard itself in the late morning, when coaches pull in and out of the hotel entrances. Early flights are the simplest of all: before dawn the whole route is quiet, and a sleeping child can go straight from bed into a seat that is already in the car.

• The car comes to the gate named on the booking, so check that it says Royal Holiday Palace; on an early pickup, Royal Seginus next door is an easy mix-up.
• Children need their seats on the way back too: ask for them again when you book the return, with the ages as before.
• Give the flight number with the return booking, because domestic and international departures at Antalya leave from separate buildings and the drop-off depends on which.
