Leaving, the car first runs back east along the beach on Akdeniz Bulvarı, past the promenade cafés, before climbing away from the shore to the D400 and crossing the city east to the airport. In light traffic the 24 km take about 30 minutes. The beach section is the one to watch: it moves freely early in the day, but on summer evenings, when the promenade fills, it is the slowest part of the whole run, so an evening pickup deserves a margin.

The hotel faces a busy seafront boulevard, a poor place for a car to wait, so the pickup happens at the hotel entrance at the agreed time and the car is loaded and away rather than idling by the kerb. With three connected blocks, bringing the cases down from a room at the far end takes a few minutes; plan the morning so that you and the luggage are in the lobby a little before the car is due. If the last hours go on the beach, remember that the walk back through the underpass, a shower and dry clothes all come before the door.

• Set the pickup when you book the arrival: count about 30 minutes for the road and add whatever your airline asks for at check-in.
