Of the great ancient cities along this coast, Perge is the one nearest to the hotels of Lara and Kundu. It lies inland on the edge of Aksu, a short way north-east of the airport, among open fields, and the ruins themselves throw almost no shade, so this is an outing for the cool first hours of the day. Its landmark is the Hellenistic gate between two tall round towers. Around AD 120, Plancia Magna, the city's great benefactress, remodelled the horseshoe-shaped court behind them and lined it with two tiers of statue niches. Beyond it a colonnaded street leads on, split lengthwise by a stone channel that once carried water, and the stadium's seating rests on vaulted rooms, some of which served as shops.

The drive is 20 km, about 25 minutes, and a few minutes longer from the hotels at the Kundu end. The car turns its back on the sea and heads north across a plain of greenhouses and orchards, meets the D400 and leaves it again at Aksu for a last short stretch north to the gate. The statues dug up at Perge belong to the Antalya Museum on the city's western side, among them the Weary Herakles, whose upper half came back from Boston in 2011. That building closed in July 2025 to be rebuilt on the same ground; once the new one opens, the way back can cross the city to its galleries before the coast road returns you to Lara.

• Leave the hotel straight after breakfast, with water and a hat for everyone, because the walk to the far end of the colonnaded street and back is spent almost wholly in full sun.
• The booking covers the ride out from Lara; for the way back, waiting time at the site or a pickup at an agreed hour can be added when you book, and waiting suits a visit whose length the heat will decide.
• Before you plan the museum stop, check that the new Antalya Museum building has actually opened, and if it has, name the stop when you book so the return is arranged through the city.
• With a flight home later in the day, Perge fits between check-out and the airport, a short drive on from the gate: book this leg with waiting time together with the onward ride to the terminal, and your cases stay in the boot while you walk.
