Follow the shore west from Lara's sand and it rises into the cliffs the city is built on. Near their eastern end the Düden river reaches the coast and goes straight over the edge, falling about 40 metres into the sea; after the area around them, the falls are also known as Karpuzkaldıran. Along the top runs a park of lawns, paths and railed terraces, entered from Lara Caddesi, the clifftop road into town. Travel guides tend to recommend the end of the day, when the light over the gulf softens, and from the hotel strip that is an easy plan: after a last swim there is still time to reach the railing before the sun goes down.
The ride is 5 km, about 15 minutes, a little more from the hotels further east towards Kundu: west along the coast towards the city, then out at the park. From the terraces you see the falls from above and from the side, because they face the open sea: the river sliding over the lip, white water churning where it lands, mist drifting across the surface. Their full face, the whole drop with the cliff behind it, shows only from the water, and that view belongs to the boats from the old harbour below Kaleiçi, which head east along the foot of the cliffs. The booking covers the drive out; for the ride back, a pickup at a set hour or waiting time can be added when you book.
- The time of sunset moves a long way between spring and midsummer, so look it up for your date, leave the hotel with some margin and set the return pickup for just after the light has gone.
- The boat trips that pass in front of the falls are separate from the car and leave from the old harbour below Kaleiçi, so for both views book the drive to the harbour as a leg of its own and keep the clifftop for the evening.
- If the picture in your head is a path behind a curtain of water, that is the upper falls in Kepez, a separate park on the north side of the city, so say which Düden you mean when you book.
- The terraces stand at the top of a 40-metre drop, so keep small children by the hand at the railings.
