After a few days of Lara's sand and the hotel pool, children tend to start asking for proper slides, and one good answer lies on the other side of the city. The water park stands in the west of Antalya, on Dumlupınar Bulvarı just behind the long pebble beach of Konyaaltı. Plenty of people still call it Aqualand, or Aqualand Dolphinland, the name it went by before it was rebranded, but today it operates as Waterhill. It is an open-air park, with the slides and the wave pool under the sky, so the day has a natural shape: arrive in the morning with towels and sun cream, stay in the water until the park closes, then ride back across town with tired children and wet hair.

The drive is 22 km, about 25 minutes on clear roads, and it takes you right across Antalya from east to west. Out of the hotel strip the car runs west on Lara Caddesi, then crosses town either through the centre or along the wide boulevards that skirt it to the north, whichever is moving better at that hour, and comes out at Konyaaltı on Dumlupınar Bulvarı for the last stretch to the park gate. The booking covers that one-way leg, at a fixed price for the vehicle; a return pickup or waiting time can be arranged when you book. Set the pickup by the park's closing time, and allow for a slower run home, because late afternoon is when the city's own traffic builds.

• When the park closes, everyone heads for the gate at once, so either walk out half an hour before closing time or set the pickup for half an hour after it, once the children have showered and changed.
• Keep one towel dry in the bag all day, just for the car: it goes over the seat under anyone still in damp swimwear, or round a child who starts to feel the air conditioning after hours in the water.
• Waterhill and Aqualand are one park at one address, so either name will do when you book; just expect tickets and current listings for the park to use the name Waterhill.
• The park opens only for the warm season, so before you fix the times of the car, check that it is running on your date and note what time it closes that day.
