There is one road out of here and no second option. Everything leaving Göynük for the airport uses the same shelf of coast highway, so when heavy winter rain puts stones on the carriageway, or a night of maintenance closes a lane through one of the tunnels, there is no parallel route to slip onto and the queue simply waits its turn. It happens rarely. It is still the reason a departure from this shore deserves half an hour more slack than a departure from Antalya itself, and the reason to keep a phone switched on once the car is booked.

Weather aside, the fifty minutes are honest ones. The difference between coming and going shows up in the light: arriving, the mountains stood ahead of you; leaving, the sun sits out over the sea for most of the morning and the tunnel mouths swing from dark to bright over and over, which tires a driver more than the distance does. From Konyaaltı onwards it is city road, four lanes and traffic lights, and the last ten minutes to the terminal depend entirely on the hour. Set the pickup by the clock, not by the kilometres.

• In winter, ask at the desk the night before whether the coast road is running normally; reception hears about a closure well before a map application shows it.
• Maintenance on this stretch is usually done overnight, so a pickup between midnight and five is the one most likely to meet a single-lane section in a tunnel.
• A return booked together with the arrival is held at that agreed price per vehicle whatever the road does on the day.
