From Kemer, Phaselis is less a day trip than a change of scene on the same stretch of coast. The ancient city sits on a small peninsula covered in pines, its ruins spread around three bays: the northern one, the old city harbour in the middle and the broad southern bay. From the middle harbour a paved street runs to the gate raised for Hadrian's visit. Near the entrance the arches of the aqueduct stand among the trees, and to the west Tahtalı towers over the site. Many visitors come for both halves at once: an hour on the stones, then a swim in the harbours where ancient ships once moored. Because the road is so short, the visit fits round a hotel day instead of replacing it.

The leg is 15 km, about 20 minutes. Leaving Kemer, the car joins the D400 southbound and passes the turnings for Kiriş and Çamyuva, with hotel gardens and the sea on the left and the steep slopes of the Beydağları on the right. A little before Tekirova, a signposted road peels off towards the sea and winds briefly through pine forest down to the site, where cars park inside rather than on the highway. Here the hour matters more than the distance. In the morning the street and the aqueduct still lie in long shadow; by late afternoon the worst of the heat has passed, the water in the bays is at its warmest and the sun drops behind the mountains to the west earlier than it would on open coast.

• At 20 minutes each way, a drop-off now and a pickup later usually suits better than a car that waits, so name a return hour when you book and leave some slack for the swim.
• For a morning visit, be there soon after the site opens, walk the aqueduct and the paved street first, and save the bays for the hours when the stone starts to store the heat.
• For a late-afternoon visit, check the site's closing time on the day and set the pickup before it, because the car park sits inside the gates.
• Pack swimwear, a towel and water shoes alongside the camera: the shores are sand and pebble, with old harbour stone underfoot in the middle bay, and the pines, not the ruins, give the only shade.
