Tahtalı Dağı, the peak known in antiquity as Olympos, dominates the landscape around Kemer, yet from a sunbed its true height is hard to judge. The cable car answers that question. Its cabins rise from a lower station at 726 m to the summit at 2,365 m, along a line of more than four kilometres that leaves the pine forest behind and ends on bare grey limestone. On a clear morning the Gulf of Antalya is laid out below, with range after range of mountains inland. The weather at the top keeps its own rules, though: the air is cold while the pool deck is baking, and cloud can settle on the peak as the day warms up, so the usual advice is to go early.

The leg is 18 km and takes about 25 minutes. From Kemer the car joins the D400 heading south, past the turnings for Kiriş and Çamyuva, with the sea hidden behind hotel gardens on the left. A little before the Phaselis junction a signposted road branches off to the right, towards the mountain, and the last part of the journey runs along it: about seven kilometres of mountain road climbing through the pine forest of the national park. It finishes at the car park of the lower station, which already sits more than seven hundred metres above the water, where you step out into air that is noticeably fresher than it was on the shore.

• Choose the earliest pickup your breakfast allows, since a clear view from the summit is likelier before the day's cloud has had time to gather on the peak.
• Pack a fleece or a light jacket even in August, because the top station is far colder than the beach you left, and from November, often until June, there is snow at the summit.
• Time at the summit is hard to predict, so arrange a return pickup or waiting time when booking, make sure the driver has your mobile number, and ring once you are in the cabin coming down.
• If someone in the group flies down by tandem paraglider instead of riding the cabin, they land by the beach at Tekirova rather than at the station, so mention it when booking and the return can collect them there.
