This is usually the second half of an evening. Families who spent the afternoon in Alanya come back down the strip after dinner and the children are asleep before Konaklı. The rest is arrivals: a coach into Alanya with a fortnight of cases and then 37 km west to a gate on the coastal strip, or a change of hotel halfway through the holiday — a week in the town traded for a fenced beach, a pool and meals already paid for. People joining relatives who are already installed in one of the complexes travel the same road, usually with more luggage than the distance warrants.

Leaving Alanya the road runs west below the castle rock, flat through Konaklı and Payallar, then climbs onto the pine headland and spends the middle of the 37 km high above the coves as far as Avsallar. Past Avsallar it drops and stays down: the last twelve kilometres are flat coastal strip, fields inland, hotel walls on the seaward side, until the gates start. Forty minutes, give or take. The awkward parts are the two ends — out of the centre in the evening, then picking the right barrier out of a row of them with nothing on the highway to tell them apart.

• Give the complex name exactly as your voucher prints it: out here every address is the same highway and the only difference is which barrier the car stops at.
• The drive ends at a barrier rather than a door, so on grounds this size allow a few minutes on foot with the cases.
• Late evening is the fast version of this leg — once the strip empties the 37 km come in under the forty minutes.
• Nothing is sold at the gates, so water, cash or a pharmacy is easier dealt with in Alanya before you set off.
