Not every ride from an Alanya address is a holiday outing. For people who rent a flat here through the winter, or live in the town all year, Alanyum is where the weekly supermarket shop gets done, where the odd household item turns up, and where an afternoon goes when the weather closes in. Summers in Alanya are all but rainless; from autumn into spring, though, the rain arrives in earnest, heaviest in December, and that is the season of the long stays. A film at the cinema inside and an hour among the shops will fill a grey day. The difficult part comes afterwards: a week of groceries is heavy, and the bus stop on the boulevard is not your front door.

Across town to Alanyum's doors it is 5 km, about 15 minutes. The car collects you at your hotel or apartment building and heads for Keykubat Bulvarı, the dual carriageway that carries the D400 through the eastern half of the town, then follows it to the Cumhuriyet neighbourhood on the Oba side, where the shopping centre stands; you are set down at the entrance. You book this one-way leg at a fixed price per vehicle, and waiting time or a return pickup can be added at the same time, so the driver either waits out a quick supermarket run or comes back when the film ends. On the way home the car stops at your building, and the bags go only from the boot to the door.

• When the pickup is a rented flat, send the name of the complex as it appears at the entrance, the block and a pin from your map app, so the driver comes to the gate you actually use.
• Save the supermarket for the end and time it to the car's arrival, so the chilled and frozen food is out of a fridge for little more than the ride home.
• If the boot has to take more than shopping bags, such as a folding wheelchair, a walking frame or a heater bought for the winter, mention it when booking so the right car comes.
• On a rainy day, set the return time when you book, so the car can be pulling in as you come out rather than you waiting at the entrance in the wet.
