Most day trips from Alanya point out to sea: the castle rock, the caves under the cliffs, a boat round the headland. Green Canyon trades the salt water for fresh. North of Manavgat the Oymapınar dam holds the Manavgat river back in the Taurus foothills, and the reservoir behind it lies deep green between limestone walls, explored from boats that leave a pier beside the dam. From an Alanya hotel this is a whole day, not a morning: an hour along the coast, the climb into the hills, a few hours on the water and the same road home. Everything turns on the boat, so the car should leave with its departure in mind, not the other way round.

The leg runs to 75 km, about 65 minutes. Most of it is coast road: on the D400 the sea stays on your left all the way past Konaklı, Avsallar and Okurcalar, with greenhouses and banana plots on the inland side. After the turnings for Side the car enters Manavgat and leaves the coast for good, running north up the river valley; past the junction for the waterfall the farmland thins and the road climbs through the foothills in a string of bends, ending at the pier by the dam. As the booking is one way, arrange the return pickup or waiting time when you book, matched to when your boat is expected back. Heading home in the late afternoon, the sun sits behind the car once back on the coast road east.

• Settle the boat first and the car second: once you know the departure and roughly when it comes back to the pier, both ends of the day can be booked around them.
• If the car waits at the dam all day, anything you will not want on deck can stay in it; if it drives back to Alanya and returns later, take everything aboard with you.
• Keep the evening loose, because the boat's return is only approximate and a drive of a little over an hour still follows it.
• Hotels on Alanya's western side, out towards Konaklı or Avsallar, are nearer the canyon than those in town, so give the hotel name when booking and the pickup time is worked out from there.
