Okurcalar was built to be hotels and little else. It stands on the boundary where the Alanya district hands the coast over to Manavgat, belongs to neither town, and has nothing behind it that works as a high street — which is precisely why a week here produces one booking into Alanya. What people go for is the castle on its rock and the cable car up to it, the harbour, the Red Tower, the covered bazaar, and shops that open because their customers live in the town. Part of it is errands: a pharmacy, a cash machine, shoes for the child whose sandal broke on day two.

Thirty-seven kilometres east on the D400, about 40 minutes — twelve kilometres more than the Avsallar hotels pay for the same evening, and those twelve are the flat ones. The road starts on the coastal strip, follows it to the İncekum pines, then climbs through Avsallar onto the headland and spends the middle of the journey up above the coves before dropping to Payallar and Konaklı. The forty minutes buy you the western end of Alanya; the harbour and the bazaar are further in again. In August the open road costs you nothing — the whole queue is in the last kilometres.

• There is nothing outside these gates that serves as a place to wait, so arrange the pickup inside the complex entrance rather than out on the highway.
• Say what the forty minutes are for: the bazaar, the harbour and the cable car station are at different ends of the centre.
• Book the return hour along with the outbound one — at midnight there is no car to flag down on this stretch of the D400.
• Leaving after lunch gives you the bazaar in daylight and the harbour after dark on one ride, which is how most guests here spend their single trip into town.
