Two hours of road is what makes leaving Kargıcak different from leaving anywhere nearer Antalya. Take them off a seven o'clock flight, add what the airport asks of you in summer, and the car is on the slope outside at two or three in the morning, long before there is anybody behind the reception desk and long before a kitchen opens. That is worth settling days in advance rather than on the last evening: who will be at the door, whether the gate is open, where the cases will be standing. An afternoon flight, by contrast, makes this an easy day.

The first minutes are the steep ones, back up the side road to the D400, and after that the leg runs west through Mahmutlar and into Alanya, which is the part that varies. The town has its lights, its promenade and its school run, and at eight in the morning it adds ten or fifteen minutes that a three o'clock departure never meets. Past the castle rock it is open coast highway again as far as Manavgat and Side, where the junctions gather up whatever traffic the day has produced. After that the two hours are simply distance.

• Read the airport code on the ticket once more before booking the return, because from this slope Gazipaşa is a short run and Antalya is a two-hour one, and they are not the same journey to arrange.
• For a night pickup, ask the night porter to have the gate open rather than relying on the day reception, since the slope outside is no place for a car to stand and wait.
• If the flight slips while you are still in the room, send the new time and the pickup moves with it: on the way out the driver works to the hour you give him, not to the departures board.
