The first minutes of the departure run the wrong way. The lane in front of the hotel carries on east for a kilometre and a half before it meets the D400, and since that joins the eastbound carriageway, the car continues a little further to a turning point before it can head west for Antalya. In the small hours this is quickly done, and the car passes the hotel again a few minutes later on the far side of the highway. After that it is the familiar road in reverse: the İncekum coves, Okurcalar, Manavgat and the long stretch past Serik.

Plan on 90 minutes for the 104 km when the road is ordinary, and more on summer changeover days, when the coaches of half the coast leave at the same hours and Manavgat slows to a crawl. The car waits on the lane at the hotel entrance, off the highway, so loading the cases is unhurried. In the dark the entrances along this frontage look alike, with Yalıhan Aspendos only a short walk away, so confirm the hotel and the street number when you book the return.

• Settle the pickup hour at booking, not at reception: 90 minutes for the road, the turning detour included, plus the time your airline wants you inside the terminal.
• If the beach tempts you on the last morning, pack the night before and leave a bag free for wet swimwear.
