Leaving from the centre of Kemer has a rhythm of its own. In the small hours the streets are empty and the car is back on the D400 within minutes; in the late morning the same streets carry delivery vans, hotel shuttles and people heading for the beach, and getting out of town takes noticeably longer. Allow for that when you choose the pickup hour, because the 55 minutes for the 62 km assume clear streets at the start.

Once out of Kemer the road runs north past Göynük and Beldibi, through the tunnels and down into Konyaaltı, and then onto Antalya's ring road, which is where most of the variation in journey time comes from. A town hotel may have less room at the door than a beach resort with its own forecourt, so it helps to be in the lobby with the luggage a few minutes before the agreed time: the driver will come in to find you, but the car may be waiting in the street.

• Pack the night before and keep passports, phones and medicines in a bag you carry, so the boot can be loaded quickly at the kerb.
