Kemer is pine forest, a marina and a wall of all-inclusive hotels; Kaş, 145 km down the coast to the south-west, is what the same shoreline turns into once the resorts stop. People make this move for the diving above all — Kaş has the schools, the boats and the water that the bay at Kemer does not — and then for the Kekova day, the sunken city and coves reachable only from a small boat. Others split a fortnight in two: a week of pools and children's clubs, then a week of a harbour town where dinner is at a table in a lane.
The whole leg stays on the D400: 145 km and about 120 minutes. South of Kemer it runs through Çamyuva and Tekirova and past the turning for Phaselis, then leaves the sea to climb the wooded pass behind the Beydağları, dropping through tunnels to Kumluca. Finike follows at sea level with its citrus and its harbour, and the coast road bends round the headlands to Demre. The last third is the inland crossing — high, thinly settled and slow — before the descent into Kaş. Pickups in the Kemer villages add a few minutes at the start.
- The pickup hour depends on which village you are in: Beldibi at the north end and Tekirova at the south are the better part of half an hour apart before the leg even begins.
- Phaselis lies just off the road a quarter of an hour south of Kemer, and it is the one thing on this leg that costs nothing to add; from Kaş it is a two-hour drive back, so if it is wanted at all, it belongs at the start of the day.
- Give the children's ages when you book: two hours of mountain road is the wrong place to find that the seat does not fit, and it is fitted before the car leaves, not in the minutes after it pulls up.
- If you are keeping the Kemer room and coming back the same day, remember it is two hours each way while the best of Kaş is the afternoon on the water — an overnight usually makes more sense.
