Twenty-seven kilometres is the shortest leg on this coast that still needs arranging, and most of it is people changing address in the middle of a holiday: a week of diving out of Kaş harbour followed by a week in a villa above Kalkan, which is how two very different places get booked on one flight. Others arrived in Kaş by bus or off a boat and have the last stretch to do with their luggage. Then there are the awkward loads — dive bags, a folding kayak, a fortnight's shopping for a house with its own kitchen.

The D400 between the two towns is a shelf cut into the cliff, and its 27 km take about 30 minutes because hardly any of it is straight. It climbs out of Kaş past the turning for the Çukurbağ peninsula, then runs west along the cliff face with the water in sight almost the whole way, through the bend where the gorge at Kaputaş opens below. In summer the layby there fills and the traffic tightens around it for a moment; after dark the road is quiet but unlit, rock on one side and a drop on the other.

• Ask for the Kaputaş stop when you book if you want it — it is a layby on a bend, and stopping is a decision made in advance rather than as the car draws level.
• Arriving in the early afternoon often means the villa is not ready, so say if the bags need dropping first and the swim comes before check-in.
• Thirty minutes sounds like nothing, but almost none of it is straight: with a small child in the car this is the one leg on the coast where the bends never let up, so keep water and anything you might need within reach.
• The two towns are close enough to feel interchangeable and are not: if a boat, a dive or a table is booked at the far end, allow more than the half hour.
