Going this way there is nearly always a clock involved. The flight home leaves from Antalya, or there is an appointment at one of the city hospitals, a residence-permit office, a consulate, a university — the things a harbour town of a few thousand sends its people 190 km for. Others are simply ending the diving half of the holiday and want a last night in the city: a morning in Kaleiçi, a short hop to the airport on the day itself rather than a departure before dawn from the coast. Either way the day is planned backwards from a fixed hour.

You take the hardest part first, while everyone is still fresh: the climb out of Kaş and the long loops over the upland, where the villages are far apart. At Demre the sea comes back, then the greenhouses, the citrus flats at Finike, the pass above Kumluca and after that the Kemer shoreline with the mountains on your left. 190 km, about 155 minutes, and not one stretch of motorway on which to make up lost time. The variable part is the last half hour: ring road and city streets add a good twenty minutes late in the afternoon.

• Say whether the drop-off is the airport or a city address — one route skirts Antalya and the other goes into it, and the departure hour is calculated differently.
• Pickup in Kaş is usually agreed at the top of the harbour lanes rather than at the door, because the streets nearest the quay are narrow and often one-way.
• An afternoon departure in winter puts the unlit upland crossing in the dark; leaving in the morning keeps all of it in daylight.
• Name the hospital, bus terminal or hotel you are heading for: Antalya holds more than a million people and the last twenty minutes depend entirely on which part of it.
