The way back is usually about the flight. Kaş is two and a half hours from Antalya airport and Kemer is under an hour, so a holiday that begins on the Lycian coast often ends with a few days in a resort, where the last morning is a short coastal run instead of a car at five o'clock. The other half of this traffic is people rejoining the part of the holiday that has the sand, the pools and the children's club, with the Tahtalı cable car, the ruins at Phaselis and the Göynük canyon all close to the hotel door.

The order of the day reverses as well: the empty part comes first, before anyone has eaten, and the built-up part comes last. The upland crossing is behind you inside the first hour, Demre and Finike hand back the sea, and the pull over the pass above Kumluca is the last climb of the leg. What the outward run never shows you is the finish — twenty-odd kilometres of hotel frontage from Tekirova to the marina, where the coast road slows to the pace of the resort traffic. About 120 minutes for the 145 km, and afternoon starts are normal, since check-out in Kaş and check-in at a resort are hours apart.

• Give the hotel and the village together: the drop-off is at reception, and the coast road through Kemer's villages passes dozens of near-identical gates.
• If the flight home is the reason for the move, book the airport leg at the same time: from Kemer it is under an hour, and it is the flight that fixes the hour the car comes to the hotel.
• Two hours with a mountain crossing in the middle sits better before lunch than after it, and the road over the pass is at its emptiest in the first half of the morning.
• Wet dive gear and a car boot are a poor combination: pack it in something sealed before the vehicle arrives rather than at the kerb.
