Going back, the first stretch is the slowest per kilometre. The car works its way out of Oba's narrow streets, rejoins the D400 and crosses the whole of Alanya on the city boulevard before the open highway starts. At five in the morning that takes a few minutes; between mid-morning and early evening, with buses stopping and delivery vans double-parked, it can take noticeably longer. Once past the western edge of town the road runs freely by Avsallar, Okurcalar and Manavgat, and the 110 minutes for the 131 km is a fair planning figure outside the heaviest summer weekends.

The street in front of the hotel is an ordinary town street, not a private forecourt, so the driver will stop as close to the entrance as traffic allows and come in to find you. Be in the lobby with the cases at the agreed hour and the loading takes a minute. If you spend the last morning at the beach, remember that the underpass and the walk back add a few minutes each way, and leave time to rinse off and change before the car arrives.

• Allow for the drive across Alanya when you set the pickup: count the 110 minutes, then add the airline's check-in window on top, usually around three hours for international summer flights.
• If reception will hold your luggage after checkout, a late flight need not mean an early departure; book the car for the time the flight requires, not the time the room is due.
• Mention child seats again when you arrange the return leg so they are fitted before the car sets out for Oba.
