On the way out everything that slowed the last stretch of the arrival comes first. The car leaves the side street, makes its way back to the D400 and has to cross Alanya from east to west before the open coast road begins at Konaklı. Before sunrise that takes very little time; from late morning on, buses, delivery vans and the town's traffic lights can make those few kilometres the slowest of the whole journey. Beyond the town it is 131 km in all to the terminal, about 110 minutes when the roads behave.

Agree the pickup hour when you book and work it back from the flight: the drive, the check-in window your airline sets, and a margin for crossing town if you leave in daylight. The car can only pull up briefly in a residential side street, so wait in the lobby with the cases ready rather than upstairs, and it will be loaded in a minute. For an evening departure, ask reception the day before when the room is needed back and whether luggage can stay at the desk while you spend the afternoon by the sea.

• Read the airport code on the return ticket: from Oba, Gazipaşa lies east and needs no crossing of Alanya, while Antalya is the long run west, and each is booked separately.
• A last swim across the boulevard is easy to fit in, but leave time for a shower and closing the bags before the agreed hour.
• Ask for child seats again on the departure booking; they are fitted before the car leaves for Oba, not at the kerb.
