Going home from Oba, the opening stretch is the one that varies. Before it reaches open road the car has to cross the whole of Alanya westwards, and in summer the town's main avenues move slowly from late morning into the evening, with buses, delivery vans and pedestrians at every crossing. Before dawn the same distance passes in a few minutes. The pickup hour therefore depends more on when your flight leaves than on the kilometres: a midday departure needs more slack than one at six in the morning.

Past the western quarters of the town the route turns into the coast road and then the D400, and outside the peak weeks the 131 km to the terminal hold close to 110 minutes. The tunnel makes the last morning easy to use: leave the bags at reception, fit in a final swim, and meet the car at the hotel entrance. Count the suitcases again the evening before and let us know if there is one more, because two weeks of Alanya's shops tend to add one.

• Work back from the departure time: about 110 minutes on the road, plus the check-in window your airline sets, plus extra if you leave between late morning and evening, when the cross-town section is slowest.
• Use the full hotel name for the return as well, not just Kaila, since a driver in this part of Oba could otherwise pull up at Kaila Beach or Kaila City.
• Booking the arrival and the departure together fixes both dates in one go, and the return hour can still be moved later if the airline reschedules the flight.
