Antalya Airport to Green Canyon transfer
Green Canyon is a lake rather than a gorge you walk into. The Oymapınar dam, up the valley from Manavgat, backed the river up between steep limestone walls and left a long, narrow reservoir the colour of bottle glass. You see it from a boat: trips last three or four hours and pull into side bays for a swim, and the water stays cold because it comes from deep in the lake. There is no village and no beach, only the dam, the landing stage and the rock. Nothing up there is within walking distance of anywhere else, so the visit is built around the car that brings you up.
From the Side hotels the lake is half an hour to forty minutes away: down to Manavgat, then up the dam road — a half day, most of it spent on the water. Çolaklı and Kızılot much the same; Okurcalar and Avsallar come in under an hour, while Alanya to the east and Belek and Kadriye to the west take an hour or a little more, a full day at either end. Kemer is out of the question. Most people take in the Manavgat falls on the way down. A coach hands you a departure time and a bus to catch; your own driver waits at the landing stage as long as the boat is out.
Coming straight from the terminal is 87 km and about 75 minutes, and at the top there is only the dam, the landing stage and the rock. With cases in the car and a boat trip that eats the middle of the day, this is not an arrival-day stop; the Manavgat falls, a short turn off the same road lower down the valley, suit that far better. Save the lake for a morning when you have nowhere else to be.
Visiting Green Canyon
Everything here happens on the water, and the water is not ours to arrange. The boats belong to the operators at the landing below the dam; they are booked there, or through whoever sold you the trip, and our side of it is the road up and the road down. That shapes the morning more than anything else, because arriving just after a departure means an hour on a concrete quay with the rock for company. Counted end to end, a hotel on the Side strip gives five to six hours to this, of which three or four are spent afloat and the rest is road.
The first thing you pass is the dam wall itself, and then the reservoir narrows and the cliffs close over the boat. Bays open one after another until the engine stops in one of them for a swim, and this is where people are caught out: there is no shallow end and nowhere to stand up, so you go in off the boat by ladder into deep cold water and come back up the same ladder. Confident swimmers remember it for years. A child used to a hotel pool may take one look and decline, and there is no beach to send them to instead.
This is the place on the whole coast where the season decides whether there is anything to do at all, so ask whether boats are going before the car is booked rather than after. The dam road is a dead end with nothing along it, which is why one car stays at the landing for the whole trip; it is also why the pairing works downhill instead of up, since the way back passes Manavgat and the falls or the town make a second half without adding any distance. Anyone worried about seasickness can relax about the lake: the water is flat, and it is the climb up the valley that unsettles stomachs.
- Ask at the landing how long your trip runs before you step aboard, because three hours and four hours are two different afternoons.
- There is no shallow water anywhere on this lake, so a swim means a ladder and cold depth from the first second.
- The boat is where the entire visit happens, so whatever you want with you has to come aboard: nothing at the landing is reachable on foot.
- Confirm that boats are going on your dates before the transfer is fixed, because there is nothing else up the dam road to fall back on.
