The way out is not the way in reversed. From Selam Sokak the car runs to the end of Oba Caddesi and turns west along Ahmet Tokuş Bulvarı with the beach on the left for about a kilometre and a half, then joins Atatürk Bulvarı through the centre and leaves town on the D400. Before dawn that seafront route is empty and the 129 km sit comfortably inside the 105 minutes. From mid-morning the town section fills with delivery vans, buses and errands, and the open road starts noticeably later than the clock suggests.

A side street is not a hotel forecourt. On Selam Sokak the car pulls up at the door, loads and moves on; it is not a place where a vehicle can stand for long while bags come down in the lift. Bring the luggage to the lobby before the agreed hour, and if you travel with several large cases or a pushchair, mention it at booking so the vehicle is sized for it. For an evening flight, ask reception about leaving bags behind the desk while you spend the last afternoon on the beach across the boulevard.

• Count back from the flight: 105 minutes of road, the airline's check-in time, and extra on summer afternoons, when the drive through Alanya is at its slowest.
• Give the street as well as the hotel name when you book the departure, Selam Sokak off Oba Caddesi; in the middle of town a door is found faster by its street than by its sign.
• Even if you would rather wait by the sea, keep the pickup at the hotel door; Ahmet Tokuş Bulvarı is a through road, not a place to flag the car down.
