Leaving, the layout of the boulevard works in your favour. The car pulls out of the seaward gate straight into the northbound lanes, the junction with the D400 is less than a kilometre ahead, and within a couple of minutes it is on the highway without touching the town centre. What can slow that first stretch is the town itself in the afternoon: buses stopping on the boulevard, delivery vans, people crossing between the hotels and the shops. Before seven in the morning none of that has started, and the 60 km to the terminal run at highway pace from the junction onwards.

The road north is your arrival in reverse: Göynük, Beldibi, the tunnels cut into the cliffs, then Konyaaltı and the ring round Antalya, which is where the 55 minutes are won or lost on a weekday evening. A departure from a town hotel also has a practical side the resorts out on the highway lack: this one opens onto a public boulevard rather than a private drive in the pines, so the car cannot stand at the gate for long. Have the cases down in the lobby and the room settled before the pickup time, and the driver loads up and moves off without holding up the traffic behind.

• Book the pickup with the hotel's name and its boulevard number; with the DoubleTree gate next door and Crystal De Luxe a few streets away, a driver going by the brand alone could stop at the wrong entrance in the dark.
• With the town on the doorstep, an evening flight leaves time for the marina; ask reception the day before by what time the room must be cleared and where the luggage can wait until the car comes.
• Children's seats, extra luggage or a pickup time moved by a rescheduled flight should all reach us before the day itself; the car is fitted out and dispatched to the booking, not adjusted at the gate.
