Leaving is quicker than arriving. Rather than climbing back through the village, the car takes the lane out to Atatürk Caddesi and follows it south for about 700 metres to where the street meets the D400 at the bottom of Beldibi, then turns north onto the highway. The three kilometres of shops and hotel gates that the arrival crawled through are skipped altogether. After that it is the coast road home: the tunnels, the descent to Konyaaltı and the ring road to the airport, 48 km in all and about 45 minutes in normal traffic.

The few hundred metres around Sunbel hold several hotel entrances in a row, and on early departure mornings coaches from all of them gather in the same stretch of street. Your car is booked for your party alone and comes to the Sunbel gate itself, so give the full name and number when you arrange it and the driver will not be looking for you at the neighbouring entrance. Have the bags down in reception a few minutes before the agreed time.

• Count back from your flight: the 45-minute drive plus the airline's check-in time, and a bit more on a summer afternoon when the city stretch near the airport fills up.
• Changes in the head count or the number of cases should reach us before the day, since a bigger car has to be sent out from the start.
• If you check out early and fly late, the beach and the cafés of the village fill the gap, but keep an eye on the time and be back at the gate before the car is due.
