Going home, the slow part comes first. The first stretch west still runs through Alanya's own western districts, one set of traffic lights after another, before the D400 opens out beyond the last suburbs towards Konaklı. Before dawn that takes only a few minutes. On a summer departure in the middle of the morning, when town buses, delivery vans and beach traffic share the same lanes, it takes noticeably longer, and that is the margin worth adding when you choose the pickup time.

Beyond the town the road is the arrival played backwards: Konaklı, Avsallar and Okurcalar along the shore, the crossing of Manavgat, then the long flat run past Serik and Aksu to the terminal, 125 km and about 105 minutes in all. Work the time back from the flight, adding the check-in time your airline asks for and a little extra for Alanya. Have the luggage down in the lobby at the agreed time, so loading takes a minute and the car can rejoin the traffic at once.

• Put Ananea Kleopatra Beach and 900. Sokak on the departure booking as well, so the car comes to this door and not to the Kleopatra Beach Hotel by the bus station.
• With an evening flight the last afternoon can still be spent on Kleopatra beach or in the old town on foot; ask reception in advance where the bags can wait after check-out.
• The fare is agreed per vehicle at the time of booking, so a slow crawl out of Alanya costs minutes rather than money.
