On the way out the first minutes are spent in town streets rather than on the highway: the car threads back up through Kızlarpınarı to the D400 before it can swing west. Before six in the morning these streets are empty and that takes very little time; on a weekday morning in term time, parents dropping children at the primary school around the corner add to the traffic. After that the 125 km run back along the coast through Konaklı, Türkler, Avsallar and Okurcalar and on past Manavgat and Serik, about 105 minutes in all at a calm hour.

Since the hotel is set among apartment blocks, the driver stops on the street by the entrance, so be ready in the lobby with the luggage at the agreed time rather than waiting in the room for a call. The more serious risk is a pickup note that just says Kleopatra, in a quarter where several hotels carry that word within a few hundred metres of one another. Give the full hotel name together with the street and the number, 26, and the driver goes straight to the right door even in the dark.

• Set the departure hour when you book: 105 minutes for the road plus your airline's check-in window, and a margin on summer mornings for the Manavgat junctions.
• Children's seats for the departure have to be requested in the booking; they are fitted before the car sets out for the hotel.
• Because the price is set per car in advance, a queue on the D400 out of Alanya costs you minutes, not money.
