Leaving from a street in the centre rather than from the waterfront has one advantage: the car does not have to work its way along the busy seafront on a summer evening, when the shore is full of people walking. Before dawn the town is quiet and the driver comes to the hotel door at the time fixed when you booked. Have the bags down in the lobby before then, so the car is not left standing in the street while the cases are fetched.

Northbound, the 61 km pass Göynük and Beldibi, run through the tunnels and along the Konyaaltı front to the ring road and the terminal, about 55 minutes in normal traffic. The Antalya end is where time goes: on summer Saturdays and weekday mornings the approach to the airport slows noticeably. Set the pickup by counting back from departure, adding the drive, a margin for that last stretch and the check-in time your airline asks for.

• If you want one last swim, remember the beach is a bus ride or a walk away; leave time to get back, shower and collect the bags before the car arrives.
• A child seat booked only for the arrival will not reappear on the way back by itself, so list it in the departure booking as well.
• At a very early pickup breakfast may not be served yet; ask reception the evening before whether something can be packed for the road.
