Good to know

The Kaş region is the Lycian end of Antalya province, where the coast stops being a line of beach hotels and becomes cliffs, coves and hill towns. Kaş itself is a harbour town built down a slope, with a Lycian sarcophagus standing in the middle of a street and the Greek island of Meis close enough to make out the houses on it. Some twenty kilometres further west, Kalkan climbs the hillside above a small harbour, its upper slopes covered with villas and private pools. Between and beyond them lie the beaches people drive out for: Kaputaş in its gorge and Patara behind its dunes. Diving, sea kayaking and boat days replace the all-inclusive band.

Every transfer from Antalya Airport uses the D400, and the second half is nothing like the first. The road runs south past Kemer, Kumluca, Finike and Demre, then leaves the shore and crosses high, thinly settled country in long loops before dropping back to the sea at Kaş; from there to Kalkan it clings to the cliffs high above the water. The band is 190 km to Kaş and 210 km to Kalkan, roughly 155 and 170 minutes. There is no motorway on this corridor, so the time is set by the shape of the road rather than by traffic, and it barely changes between July and January. Night arrivals cross the unlit upland in the dark.

The two towns are not interchangeable. Kaş is a place you walk: the harbour, the market lanes, dive boats leaving early, and swimming from platforms and pebble coves rather than sand. Kalkan is steeper and quieter, built around self-catering villas above the bay, with rooftop restaurants, a small shingle beach and beach clubs reached by boat or shuttle. Families who want sand drive out to Patara. For a transfer that means giving the villa or the Çukurbağ peninsula road as well as the town, since the final approaches differ more than the map suggests, and booking the return at the same time: a summer departure means leaving the coast close to six hours before take-off.

Kaş transfer — frequently asked questions

How far is Kaş from Antalya Airport, and how long does the transfer take?

Kaş is 190 km away and the drive takes about 155 minutes. Kalkan, the other town in the region, is 210 km and roughly 170 minutes. Both figures assume the D400 the whole way, including the inland mountain crossing after Demre, and they change little between summer and winter because there is no motorway to be slowed down.

Is Dalaman airport closer to Kaş and Kalkan?

Dalaman is the nearer airport, particularly for Kalkan and Patara, and travellers who can choose often fly there. Many schedules only serve Antalya, though, and from Antalya the drive is the long coastal and mountain run described above. It is worth comparing both airports before the tickets are booked.

Is there public transport from Antalya Airport to Kaş?

There is no scheduled service from the terminal. Travellers using public transport go into Antalya first, then to the intercity bus station, and take a coach west along the coast, which means two changes with luggage and several hours on the road. A private transfer covers the same route door to door.

Kaş or Kalkan — which one should we choose?

Kaş suits people who want a town to walk around, with diving and boat trips, and who do not mind swimming off platforms. Kalkan suits a villa week: steep lanes, rooftop restaurants, a pool of your own and beach clubs reached by boat or shuttle. Neither is a sandy all-inclusive resort; for sand the region's answer is Patara.

Can we stop at Kaputaş or Patara on the way?

On the way to Kalkan the road passes the Kaputaş layby just after Kaş, and the Patara turning comes a little beyond Kalkan, so both fit as a break in the journey. Say so when you book, so the waiting time is part of the plan. Bear in mind that Kaputaş is reached by a long staircase down the cliff and that Patara closes in the evening during the nesting season.

How early should we leave for the flight home?

Work backwards: three hours at the airport in summer, plus 155 minutes from Kaş or 170 from Kalkan, plus a margin for one stop. That puts departure from the coast around six hours before take-off, and a little earlier if you are staying beyond Kalkan towards Patara.
