Good to know

The Bodrum peninsula is not part of the Antalya coast at all: it is a hilly finger of land at the south-western corner of Turkey, pointing into the Aegean towards the Greek island of Kos, visible from the shore. Bodrum town sits on the neck between two bays, with the castle of the Knights of St John between them and the foundations of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus behind it. Around it, villages use the same coastline in different ways: Gümbet and Bitez, Ortakent and Turgutreis on the south side, Gümüşlük at the western end, Torba, Göltürkbükü, Gündoğan and Yalıkavak facing north. People come for boats, small bays and rented villas rather than one long beach.

Every transfer from Antalya Airport to the peninsula is 435 km, one of the longest legs on our price list and about 5 hours 35 minutes of driving without stops. Shortly after Antalya the road leaves the sea for the interior and stays there: high farmland first, then Muğla and Yatağan, then the olive country around Milas, and the water only reappears at the very end on the peninsula road. Much of it is single carriageway behind lorries rather than motorway, so the road itself sets the time, not the traffic. Summer congestion bites at both ends, winter brings fog and early dark on the uplands, and night arrivals run smoothly but with little open for a break.

Within the peninsula the choice is north shore or south shore. The south-facing bays hold most of the larger hotels: Gümbet with its bars, Bitez and Ortakent with shallow water for families, Turgutreis and Akyarlar at the western tip. The north side — Torba, Göltürkbükü, Gündoğan, Yalıkavak — means villas, marinas and clubs on wooden decks over the water; Gümüşlük stays quiet in its own bay. Bodrum town is the one place you can walk around in the evening. For a transfer, give the village and not just Bodrum: the outer ones add twenty to forty minutes over the hills. The return is the same road reversed: a summer departure from Antalya means leaving nine to ten hours before take-off.

Bodrum transfer — frequently asked questions

How long does the transfer from Antalya Airport to Bodrum take?

The distance is 435 km and the driving time is about 5 hours 35 minutes without stops. Almost nobody does it without stopping, so set aside half a day. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign and the flight is tracked, which matters on a run this long because a delayed landing moves the whole drive into the night.

Wouldn't it be easier to fly into Milas–Bodrum airport?

When the schedule allows it, usually yes: Milas–Bodrum airport is around 35 km north-east of the town. The drive from Antalya normally exists because the ticket and the hotel ended up pointing in different directions. Compare both airports before the tickets are booked, or at least look at flying home from Bodrum.

Is there a bus from Antalya Airport to Bodrum?

No service runs from the terminal itself. On public transport you go into Antalya first, then to the intercity coach station, then by coach to the Bodrum bus station, and finish with a dolmuş out to the village. That is two changes with luggage and most of a day; a private transfer covers the same route door to door.

Can we stop on the way?

Yes. The route runs inland through and past small towns, and a break somewhere around the middle is the easiest to arrange. Say so when you book so the waiting time is part of the plan. Fewer places are open late at night, so on a night transfer it is worth taking the stop when it is offered.

Which part of the peninsula should we stay in?

Gümbet for loud evenings, Bitez and Ortakent for shallow water and children, Gümüşlük and the northern bays of Göltürkbükü and Gündoğan for quiet, Yalıkavak and Turgutreis for a marina and somewhere to walk in the evening. If you want to leave the hotel on foot after dinner, Bodrum town itself is the straightforward answer.

How early should we set off for the flight home?

Work backwards: three hours at the airport in summer, plus roughly 5 hours 35 minutes of driving, plus a margin for the break and the leg from your village into Bodrum. That puts departure nine to ten hours before take-off, and a little earlier from the outer villages.
