On the way out, the car comes back up Balıktay Sokak to the D400 and has to turn left across the eastbound traffic to set off towards Antalya. At quiet hours that takes a moment; in daytime it can mean waiting for a gap or carrying on to a turning point first. From there the coast unrolls in reverse — Avsallar, Okurcalar, Kızılot and Kızılağaç, villages where the speed drops at crossings and bus stops — and then Manavgat, where junctions and lights account for most of the variation in journey time. Outside the summer peaks, 90 minutes for the 105 km is a fair figure; in August, give it more.

Being on the sea side of the highway, a few minutes from the shore, makes a last swim on the morning of departure easy to fit in. It works if the room is cleared first: hand the cases to reception, keep a light bag for the wet things, and be back in the lobby before the agreed time. The car waits at the hotel entrance on Balıktay Sokak rather than up on the D400, so the distance from the door to the boot is short, even with children in tow and a trolley of luggage.

• Fix the pickup when you book, not at reception: 90 minutes for the drive, plus the time your airline wants you at check-in, plus a cushion for Manavgat in daytime.
• Child seats are fitted before the car leaves for Fuğla, so ask for them on the departure leg too, even if you already had them on arrival.
• Pack wet swimwear in its own bag before the car arrives; on a drive this long the boot stays shut over everybody's cases, and nothing damp should sit on top of them.
