Westbound the reason is fresh water. Alanya's hotels sit above a bay with none of it; Manavgat has the waterfall, the boats that work up and down the river, the green reservoir held behind the Oymapınar dam between limestone walls, and restaurants built out over the current where the point is the cold and the shade rather than the view. It is also the way to the rafting on the Köprüçay and to the ruins at Side for anyone who has already climbed the castle. And in the middle of a fortnight it is the hotel-change run, Alanya to the Side and Manavgat strip.

Getting out of Alanya is the slowest part of the westbound run. You leave through Oba and the western hotel strip, Konaklı and Türkler, and the town takes a while to let go in the morning, which is when this ride usually starts. Sixty kilometres, about 55 minutes. Over the İncekum headland the pines come down to the road, then the land flattens for good: greenhouses, banana plastic, the long straight through Kızılağaç and Kızılot. The Side junctions come first, Manavgat after. Late in the day the sun sits low and hard straight ahead from Avsallar onwards, and a visor helps more than a change of seat.

• The waterfall and the Green Canyon jetty are on different roads out of Manavgat, so name the one you want rather than asking for the town.
• Coming back into Alanya in the evening is the slow half of a day out: the traffic at the hotel gates along the western strip builds from late afternoon.
• If this is a mid-holiday hotel change, say how many bags there are — a car that seats four does not necessarily take four large cases.
• The river restaurants sit on wooden platforms over the water with the parking on the road above, so the last part is a short walk down.
