Belek is planned country: fairways, a pine belt, wide flat sand and hotels behind their own gates. What it has not got is relief: nothing rises out of the ground for thirty kilometres, there is no harbour with boats going anywhere, and no canyon to walk into. So the crossing of the bay is made by people who booked the second week under the mountains, by the half of a golf party that does not play, by guests who would rather spend an evening in a town with a harbour and a market than another night behind the barrier, and by anyone going further south still, to Olympos and the flames on the hillside above Çıralı.

The first few kilometres are the resort's own approach road through the pines out to the Serik junction. Then the D400 west: Aksu, the airport turning at roughly a third of the way, the eastern edge of Antalya and the ring road around the city. Past Konyaaltı the flat driving ends: the carriageway narrows, the bends begin, and the last half hour is spent high on the seaward face of the Beydağları, in and out of the rock, before the road comes down to the water for the run in. 75 km, about 65 minutes, and the stretch that costs extra time is the city ring rather than the coast.

• The route passes the airport junction about a third of the way along, so collecting someone off a later flight on the way across is easy to arrange — at booking rather than on the day.
• Book outside the late-afternoon peak around Antalya; an hour's difference shows up more on this leg than 75 km would suggest.
• Nothing can be made up on the last thirty kilometres of mountain road, so a morning boat out of Kemer harbour has to be paid for by leaving Belek earlier, not by the driver.
• If part of the group is staying on in Belek, or you are collecting friends from a second hotel, give both addresses when you book — the resort roads at this end add minutes quickly.
