With the D400 only a couple of hundred metres behind the hotel, the way out starts briskly: a short run along Atatürk Caddesi to the junction and the car is on the highway, pointing north. The tunnels come first, and before dawn they are close to empty. The slow section sits at the far end, where the road climbs out of Konyaaltı and merges with city traffic; on weekday mornings that is where the 45 minutes for the 46 km is most likely to stretch.

The car comes to the main entrance on Atatürk Caddesi, the same side you arrived at, so wait in the lobby rather than over by the beach crossing. Settling the bill the evening before saves a queue at an early hour, and a last look round the room for chargers and passports is easier while the driver is still on the way than after the boot is shut. If the party has grown or picked up a pushchair during the stay, tell us before the day so the right vehicle turns up.

• Work backwards from the flight: 45 minutes on the road plus whatever check-in time your airline asks for, and the pickup hour falls out of the two.
• Pack the wet swimwear and beach towels before the car is due; the driver arrives at the agreed hour, not after one more dip across the road.
• Ask for a child seat on the airport run as well as on arrival; it is fitted before the car sets out.
