Departing, the order reverses with one difference: the car climbs the local lanes back to the highway and joins it a little east of where it left, turning across onto the westbound carriageway at the junction there. That turn is the one moment of the trip that depends on traffic. Before dawn it is immediate; in the middle of a summer morning it can mean waiting for the oncoming lanes to clear. Then it is the same 106 km of coast road past Avsallar, Okurcalar and Manavgat, and the 90 minutes generally hold.

A beach hotel's last morning follows its own pattern. Swimwear dries slowly in the sea air, towels have to go back, and children want one more hour on the sand, while the pickup time agreed at booking is when the car is at the door, not when packing begins. Bring the bags to reception before going down for that last swim, and keep the final half hour for changing. Holidays by the sea also tend to add luggage, from snorkels to bags of shopping from Alanya, so count the cases again the evening before and tell us if the number has grown.

• Plan from the flight backwards: 90 minutes of driving, check-in time, and a margin for summer changeover traffic around Manavgat.
• Ask for the pickup at the main entrance, not on the D400; the hotel is reached from the side lanes and a car cannot stop on the highway.
• With an evening flight, ask reception about a room or luggage storage for the afternoon before you fix the hour; moving the pickup is easy at booking and harder once the car is on its way.
