At the gate, the departure is the easier direction: from the inland side the car turns right onto the westbound carriageway and is on its way. What needs planning is the distance. With 115 minutes of driving before the terminal, a morning flight from Antalya puts the pickup well before dawn, and Alanya, which comes within the first half hour, is the part of the road whose timing varies most: empty at four in the morning, slow on a summer afternoon when the town's own traffic meets the coaches leaving the hotels.

Beyond Alanya the 142 km unwind as they did on the way in, only westbound: the Konaklı and Okurcalar coast, the traffic lights of Manavgat, then the open stretch past Serik to the airport turning. Put the terminal on top of the drive, because bag drop, passport control and security can take as long as a good part of the road in high summer, and give us the pickup hour when you book rather than on the day. If your return flight leaves from Gazipaşa instead, book that leg on its own: it is a short run east, not this one.

• For a flight before about ten in the morning the arithmetic points to a pickup in the dark, so ask reception the evening before what can be arranged for breakfast at that hour.
• Keep water, chargers and whatever the children need in a bag that rides in the cabin rather than the boot; on a run this long you will want them before the airport.
• Give the luggage count again when you confirm the return, since a car chosen for the cases you arrived with may not take what a fortnight near Alanya has added.
