Going back, the short distance shapes the plan. With 18 km and about twenty-five minutes of road, there is no reason to leave at dawn for a midday flight, and most guests have time for a last breakfast before the car comes. What adds minutes is the resort rather than the road: the walk with luggage from a room far from the lobby, the checkout queue on a busy change-over morning and fetching bags left with the bell desk all happen before the car can move off.

Early in the morning Lara Caddesi is quiet, and the driver will be at the hotel entrance at the agreed time. Later in the high season the same road fills with transfer coaches stopping at one gate after another, which slows the first kilometre more than anything that follows. Once the car turns away from the shore the airport is close, so the figure to plan around is not the drive but the check-in time your airline gives; work back from that and the pickup hour is easy to set.

• If your room is far from the lobby, ask reception the evening before about having the luggage brought down, so the cases are waiting when the car pulls in.
• Inflatables, snorkelling sets and other beach gear bought on holiday take up boot space; mention them when you book the departure.
• Give your full name and room number with the booking: on a change-over morning the lobby is busy, and that makes you easy for the driver to find.
